RL Wit
About
RL Wit is a serif typeface designed for display use, drawing inspiration from the Renaissance epitaphs found on churches in the city of Wrocław. After World War II, Wrocław became part of Poland, but for nearly 500 years prior, it was a German city known as Breslau. Because of the significant historical upheavals of the 20th century, little of Breslau's historical lettering has survived. Fortunately, some epitaphs carved during the late Renaissance remain preserved in the city, offering a glimpse into the artistry of the time.
These epitaphs often feature Latin inscriptions framed by German texts engraved in Fraktur or Schwabacher styles. The interplay of these styles reveals their mutual influence: while the Latin inscriptions exhibit the refined elegance of the Renaissance, they still retain echoes of a medieval feel. The workshop responsible for these epitaphs was run by the sculptor Gerhard Hendrik and his assistants. Hendrik, born in the Netherlands, traveled before settling in Breslau, where he created numerous sculptures in city churches and surrounding areas. Since the lettering was likely delegated to Hendrik’s assistants, pinpointing the exact letter carvers is challenging. Nonetheless, the inscriptions possess a distinctive, eye-catching quality.
RL Wit takes loose inspiration and cues from its source material, synthesizing and reinterpreting them for a modern, digital type context. The typeface family emphasizes delicate features, with weights ranging from Hairline to Bold, capturing the essence of the original while offering a contemporary twist.
